Cracked screen on Macbook pro 13"
#1
Somehow the screen got cracked on my daughter's 13" macbook pro.

It is a hairline crack that is hard to see but it is several inches long across the left corner.

Any recommendations on where to get it fixed?

Estimated cost?

I believe I used my AMEX Blue card, It may have some type of warranty. I need to research more.

If the damage is something not covered by AppleCare, American Express may also decline coverage. That's worst case scenario, but doesn't hurt to talk to Apple first to see how they classify the repair.

Is it held in place with magnets like the iMac?

The glass on MBP's is held in by adhesive. Cracked glass is a PITA to remove (I've done it twice). Once it is cracked, it is more likely to crack more when you start removing it, and then it is just messy and difficult. Whole glass removes without too much trouble.

Removing the glass just requires a heat gun and a heavy duty suction cup (the one I got with my glass replacement actually seems to be the suction cup section of a GPS windshield mount). Other vendors sell better ones that have better handholds. I got my glass from: http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Unibody-Ma...17333.html

The other annoying part is getting the new glass back on without getting any dust trapped.

Thanks for the quick response. Hopefully if I can't get it covered under warranty I will be able to fix it with the OWC kit.

Any advice on the difficulty of the replacement glass?

Tape up the whole screen before starting to remove, so glass pieces will stay. Trim the tape just inside the outer edge of the glass.

This actually seems like a genius idea, until you try it (which I did). The suction cup won't work on the tape (maybe if you have 3"+ wide tape, so each piece is wider than the suction cup, it would).

Perhaps only taping the half that has the crack would work. Then lift from the other side. Once you get a corner up, using the heat gun and spludger(s) (or old credit cards) to keep the glass lifted as you go around.

But, as I said earlier, once the glass is cracked, it becomes much more prone to cracking more. The tape at least keeps all the pieces somewhat together, but getting all those little pieces off of the frame and adhesive sticking it to the frame is a PITA.

Won't clear sealing tape work?

Should be wide enough for the suction cup.

Vinyl Red Stucco tape should work. This tape is great for many thing since it leaves no residue. Available at Home Depot.
