Just learned something I hate about the iPad (and Apple)

A Safari alternative will still typically include the iOS info in its user agent and similarly fail.

I've never tried an alternative browser that (might) have a setting for user agent that additionally spoofs the OS, and would not be surprised to learn such things would not be accepted in the App Store.

Even so, I recall reading something a while back that can detect the OS apart from whatever browser is used. Can't find it now.

You'd think so, but iCab can "spoof" the OS also...
One can pick Safari (iPad), Safari 5 (Mac), Internet Explorer (Windows), Firefox 3 (Mac), Playstation 3, and a number of others.

How sucessfully? Dunno.. but the choices are there under Settings, Browser ID.

Right, but that's still part of the browser's user agent info. What I was referring to is something deeper that can detect the real OS regardless of whatever lie the browser tells the site. Maybe it's just a rumor, I don't know.

Not the end-all be-all

What device ever really is?

The iPhone is eminently satisfactory for email unless maybe one needs to type a lot in response, or one gets emails with lots of pics.

But it's really easy to and and delete email accounts. Or just shut them off and add hers.
