Color filters for B&W film photography

I consider UV/Haze a color filter, but if you press me on it, yellow #8, I guess. I've never been a green filter kind of guy.

I think the green filter I used was a #58.

I'm interested in filters that control contrast. A polarizer is useful, as are neutral density filters. um, er... Have you ever experimented with polarizer filters? They DO increase contrast with B&W as well, and you can dial it in as well.
