Stoop sale acquisitions…
#1
Once a year our little bunch o' buildings has a stoop sale to generate money for the tree fund. I got home fairly early today, not too long after everything was set up, and snagged a Western Digital 1TB My Book Studio, new in box, for $20, and a NetGear 4-port gigabit switch (the small, blue one) for $5.

I haven't tried the switch yet, but the drive works. Unfortunately, it's a very, very annoying drive. If I had spent more than $20 on it, I think I'd want my money back. I think if I had offered $10 or $15, I might have gotten it for that.

On the positive side: in addition to the expected USB cable, it included a FW800 cable and a FW800 to 400 adapter.

I found out who donated the WD drive to the stoop sale, but haven't had a chance to ask her why she didn't want it. It was still shrink-wrapped, so she didn't even try it out.

Some good stuff this year: a couple of like-new microwaves, a brand new stainless steel sink, some Corporate Zombie toys…

In what way is the drive annoying? Noise level?

Sounds like the drives I picked up for $22.50 ea. at Staples. What's a annoying about it, mine are quiet,
don't get and seems quite fast. The only thing I don't care for is the wall wart power supply.

Is it silver with an LCD display on the front?

What's annoying is the software that comes with it, and the "CD" image it wants to mount on your desktop all the time. Fortunately WD has released a firmware fix that allows you to get rid of that thing.

Google it if you are curious: lots of complaints from when it was first introduced about the intrusive software and the fact that it couldn't just be turned off.

Just not the kind of drive I ever buy; in fact, I pretty much never buy externals, especially not the ones from the drive manufacturers. I prefer to buy good enclosures and then buy and install the drives myself.
