wife got an iPhone, can I make her a ring-tone from a song, or even record one of the kids laughing, or do I have to pay for ring tones?

Open the song in Quicktime

crop song to preference

export save as songname.m4a

change filename to songname.m4r

import to iTunes

Thanks, I was hoping there was an easier way to do it rather than using that itunes method.

Changing the start and stop times in iTunes, using a little trial and error, is the simplest way. It just does not make the smallest sound file.

Alternatively, you could use GarageBand or Fission from Rogue Amoeba to crop the file.
