Since thunderbolt is an emerging technology I think I'll just back off and get the case with firewire 800. I will most likely order next week and I will report back the speed difference booting between usb2 vs firewire 800 for Black. I would think firewire 800 would be faster but I'm more concerned about day to day use rather than startup time.

Startup time is barely relevant to me, but definitely way improved even via USB2.
FW 800 is the obvious choice above USB2 if you have the option.
Thanks for experimenting and reporting back!

I love the convenience of the Newertech ministacks but have not been happy with there longevity... it seems to me that after 2-3 years they start to kill my HDs and appears to be a problem with the power supply failing to deliver the required voltages after a period of time.

I have seen this with v1 all the way through to v2.5 when I stopped buying them.

The first miniStack came out about 9 years ago with the v2.5 and v3 to follow for SATA drive support and then FireWire 800. The last v2.5 shipped in mid-2010 and V3 in Mid-2011. The current miniStack (v4) actually didn't ship until Spring-2012 and was delayed as we made 'perfectionist' adjustments - especially with respect to the ensuring the metal process resulted in a proper mini-matching color.

This has been and continues to be a great product line and has always shipped with power supply and power design beyond the drives of the day. OWC and NewerTech were the first to put longer warranties on external drives of this kind and until just a few years ago were the only with 3 Year Warranties vs. the typical 1-2yr (which the mass boxes are now back down/going back down to).

On the V2.5 and V3 miniStacks, the blower did have reports of noise with time and that appeared related to uneven dust build up on blades which put it out of balance. The new miniStack (v4) uses the same Maglev fan that the Apple Mac mini has with particular attention to quiet, long term operation.

I am sorry and disappointed at your experience, but there is more to it i suspect. To warranty any product for 3 years if it had the susceptibility you describe would have been bad on about every level - and the way we see things, even without respect to the warranty. Plenty of factors and what drives goes in is one of them too.

Thanks!
