Yeah, a lot of CGI is junk but it isn't the fault of the technology. It just seems like the directors are too in love with swoopy camera movements and exaggerated, oversped motion (CGI airplanes are the absolute worst). The movements of Harryhausen's creatures were subtle and measured. No reason they can't do that on a computer, they just don't.
In the documentary I linked above, Cameron insists that if Harryhausen was working today, that he'd be using the best technology available today (meaning CGI) - cut immediately to Harryhausen saying that he would NOT be using CGI if he were working today... :-)

I just heard a great quote from Harryhausen on the radio..

They said Harryhausen just smiled every time he watched modern movie credits with 200 names in the special effects department that used to list just him for his movies.
