I've posted sub $100 android phones here before.

Yes, but before doesn't equal now. Smile The Moto G is $60, new, right now.

$209 refurb? While I appreciate it is an unlocked GSM model (could use it for my actual phone if need be), I can get the Virgin Mobile S3 for $199, which also comes with a $15 gift card (probably get the Taco Bell card for my mom). However, $199 is still far more than $60, even with the gift card. Honestly, how much faster is an S3 than the Moto G at this point? Probably pretty close in performance, right?

Pros for the S3 (order of importance for me):
  • Dual Band WiFi
  • More built in storage
  • MicroSD card
  • Removable battery
  • Likely has a better camera
  • MHL
  • NFC

Only the first three four mean much to me.

Pros for the Moto G:
  • $60!!!
  • Cleaner Android installation
Edit: Close tag for list.

Granted a smaller list, but that first tidbit, Moto G being a third of the price compared to an S3, is the clincher. Cleaner installation shouldn't be overlooked either. For my needs, browse the web, play Minecraft PE with my daughter and maybe stream some media, seems like a reasonable compromise. And let's not forget -- $60!!!! As far as design, not that it matters much for my use case, I find the Moto G to be a handsome, understated device, and frankly nicer looking than the S3.

Would I prefer a microSD slot? Yep. What I prefer a removable battery? Definitely! Would I at the very least prefer 16GB of internal storage? Sure. However, I also didn't really need to spend any money, so the best bang for the buck device wins in this case. If the S3 was $159 or even $179, in addition to the $15 gift card, I might have gone that route. Then again, I can get two of these Moto G models for less than one S3. Since I have two older iPod touches which could use an upgrade, that's pretty compelling. Two for less than the price of one!

I do appreciate your suggestions and as always, this is a great discussion!!! Smile

After much thought, decided to keep it. Like that I can pick up two phones and two flip cases for less than one S3. That clinched it for me.

Probably the best phone for Page Plus, at least until Verizon allows MVNOs LTE access.

I'm leaning towards keeping the Moto G unless someone comes up with a better option in the same price range. Definitely open to suggestions.

It does have a micro-USB port. The kid has one of these and a 128GB USB thumb drive and an adapter cable.

They make USB drives with both regular and micro USB ports that plug directly in.

Flashing it to Verizon/PagePlus takes a few steps, but he did it all by himself.

Wait, it supports USB OTG? That's cool.

Hey, my HTC Hydro XTRM was $30 new from the MetroPCS store Latest Android OS, LTE and has an internal mSD slot good up to I believe 64 gig mSD card. Probably not tested with a 128 gig one.

Can set up to use WiFi as internet access, and for wi-fi calling.

Edit: Nope, this one (different radios, but the specs are otherwise the same):

Jelly Bean 4.1 instead of 4.4, 4GB internal storage instead of 8GB, seems like a slower processor and GPU, and lower res screen. Even still, $30 isn't bad. I probably would have purchased the fairly similar ZTE Virgin model for $50 plus $15 gift card since I was already at Target at the time. Ends up being about the same price.

Edit: Also, while that phone would be fine for me, I only need these devices for tablet duty, that model isn't GSM capable and the old CDMA network is currently being fazed out by MetoPCS/T-Mobile. You are going to need to upgrade phones, possibly sooner than later. Guessing why the phone was so inexpensive. Again, that would be fine for me, but you might want to start phone shopping to save the hassle later.

Hmmm...my apologies Racer, looks like the GSM model, not the CDMA/LTE model:

However, according to Slickdeals, people going into the store are "encouraged" to activate a line. If true, that doesn't do much for me as I don't need another phone line. $45 in store price plus $15 activation. No thanks. Which is too bad really, because the phone seems decent for $30.

Thanks for the tip anyway.
