Y.A.R.T. (yet another router thread)
#1
In solving my previous VOIP issues (finally, via QOS settings), I had gotten an open box Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH2. It had constant self reboot issues. I replaced it with the same model, but new, unopened. I am not a power user by any means, but want DD-WRT for finer configuration. New one seems solid enough and I'm a long time Buffalo customer.

Time warner sent a letter a bit ago, saying they were boosting speeds soon. I have 15 down/1 up.
Remembering this, I decided yesterday to do speedtest.net and see what was up. Results - avg 30 down/ .16 up. (Yes, that's .16. Sometimes .25, only a quarter of what I had) I thought it strange that I would see the boost in one direction and get much poorer results in the other. I do know that wifi does not give full speed as wired, but .16-.25 is not right.

Spoke to TW. Hard wired from the cable modem to my computer, the speed tested at 50 up/5 down, what I was promised.

Spoke to Buffalo. Reset to factory, uploaded saved settings. On wifi- same bad down speed. I hard wired to the router and got 50/5! So, as the tech suggested, maybe the radio part of the router isn't happy . . .

Called Buffalo again. Another tech suggested I speedtest each channel, as I do live in a dense area. Did all 11 and same results.

Now I'm trying to figure out what to do.
Is there some tech thing that might fix this issue? I'd really like to take advantage of the speed increase.
Do I get a new router? If so, Buffalo? Asus? Like I said, I don't do heavy streaming, but want DD-WRT level interface. All the reviews are for things that seem a bit overkill, and my budget is not THAT big.

Thanks in advance . . .

TimeWarner doesn't choke your speeds when you check them at any speed test site. On all other sites they do unless the site pays payola to TW.

OK . . . that's not the issue. I'm getting the speeds hard wired, just not an appropriate/comparable upload speed via wifi.

Any ideas?

i'll just spit out some things -

reflash the firmware, reset the settings. have your computer _right_next_ to the router. try channels 1,6,11. still not better? you might try flashing with dd-wrt. or you might buy another router and see if that solves your problem.

My computer is approx. 8' across the room with no obstructions. As I said, I tried ALL the channels. I'll try some of the other ideas.

Based on my needs, do you have any recs for a new router?

Thanks...!

Asus has a solid line. Pick the one with the specs and price you like. Might check if a given model supports dd-wrt but most do. Newegg has a good selection and prices.

....nothing worse than a flakey router!
