Stupid question:
Do you know about the "downloaded" view in the Music app?
Music on your device is available in the "downloaded" list of tracks. Hide the stupid list of purchased/cloud-downloadable music by signing out from the iTunes store in the Settings app.

Yup, I know about that, and the only music I now have on the phone is the stupid list of purchased/cloud-downloadable music ... everything else is apparently gone.
That's just ridiculous... I did a restore from backup when I updated, so it should have all been there.
Edit: I also tried using Ecoute, which says there's no music there.

Hmmm... That sucks.
I had it happen once that my music was not restored after a backup-and-restore with iTunes. Simply re-syncing was not sufficient. My music seemed to be present, but every track was unplayable in the Music app. Had to erase and restore again to get it back.

Time to switch to a cloud based player. I’ve looked into options, still haven’t uploaded music. Switched wife’s books to google drive where she can redownload directly instead of trying to sync them. Syncing them sucks @$$. She imports to iBooks and almost after every iPad upgrade, her books don’t sync (books converted from google play store or amazon to ePub to be read in iBooks). I’m like duck this. So I uploaded them to a google drive.

Carm, that's exactly what I don't want to do. I don't want to be beholden to Apple or any other online cloud provider for my music -- it is mine, and I don't want them having access to it. I also want to be able to access it wherever, even if there's no internet connection wherever I happen to be.
