Apple Hardware Test (online) seems to have stopped without finishing.
#1
Ran the normal test and quickly passed. Ran the extended test for 17 mins and it seems halted. Progress bar nearly to the end.

The cursor works, should I stop testing and move on to some other angle?

Trying to put a fresh OS on this, which (I think) is a 2010 MBP.

I'd earlier today booted from a USB stick, erased the internal HD and ran the OS installer. That took about 1.5hrs, got to the end, then "There was an error ..." I tried it twice, same result.

So I cancelled it by force-shutting down the computer. It would not Quit.

I re-ran the test, skipping the extended and it found "no trouble." Perhaps my USB installer is bad.

I found out from the Hardware Test app it's a:

MacBookPro9,2
Core i5, 2.5 GHz
Intel HD Graphics 4000
4GB RAM

Currently booted up from Internet Recovery and will try installing from that. (It delivers Mountain Lion.)

"Choose your disk ..."

No available disks show up for the installer. Also, Disk Utility's Repair, Erase etc choices grayed out. Disk name displays as " Mac OS X Base System," so ...

... I'm betting the previous OS install attempts borked the disk and left it unmountable or something? I'll try booting from the USB stick again, just for a proper erase and try Internet Recovery again.

Except, Choose Startup Disk also can't see the USB stick.

Got it restarted from the USB to erase the HD. Disk Utility shows the correct name for the HD, instead of "Mac OS X Base System".

But it will not erase the disk this time. Says, unmounting disk, erasing ... but just hangs now. Force-shutdown again.

NOPE! It just snapped into action, Operation Successful. Next up: Another Internet Recovery OS install attempt.

HA!

Now the internet installer sees the internal HD and is attempting to install.

Still going, 3 hours later. Progress bar is just about done, but the "time remaining" has very slowly been moving. "32 minutes" left to go.

It finally gave up, after going back and forth in its time estimates. "Can't download additional items needed for OS X install" or words to that effect.

Can't get an OS put on this, and the installers aren't bright enough to tell my WHY not.
