Two examples:
1. I tried (and tried, and tried, and tried) to get Amazon to give me an honest answer to what is backed up on a Kindle Fire. I was told incomplete information, and repeatedly told that I was given a full answer, even when I pointed out examples of where it was incomplete. I took this to the Amazon president's office, twice. I'm charitable, and simply say I was being misled, but most people would say Amazon was lying.
Given that backups are fairly important to most people, I don't consider this to be a trivial failing. Nor is it the type of thing I experience with any frequency with well-run companies. I run into lots of incompetence elsewhere, but this was conscious misleading of customers. That I don't tend to find elsewhere.
After this I swore I'd never buy another Amazon device.
2. I wrote a review on Amazon which was rejected. I was told by Amazon that it was because the review did not meet their guidelines, which mainly say that you need to be a verified buyer. I bought the item on Amazon on my normal (only) account, have written a number of other reviews, and bought a bunch of stuff from Amazon over the years. Amazon knows who I am.
Not only would Amazon not give me an adequate answer, they would not forward a copy of what I wrote, or allow me to write another review for that item. As far as I can tell, I met all of Amazon's requirements for a review. Meeting requirements, then telling me I did not meet them, without explaining why, is not an honest answer. While I've found this sort of attitude elsewhere, it was usually at a store which was headed down the drain.
Now I no longer write reviews on Amazon (which I tended to put a lot of effort into to make them useful), and have curtailed my purchases there.
These two incidents have shaken my faith that Amazon is operating in an honest way. People may not like Walmart for how it has affected mom & pop stores in small towns, but I've never had these kinds of issues with Walmart, Target, Meijer, or most other big retailers.
