My friend has a bowling alley business and they have about 3,000 names and I think they might bring it up to 5,000 names and would like to send out emails on upcoming leagues, events, specials etc. Their guy is only able to send out about 50 a day and that is not working. As I know nothing on how to do this please let me know if I should suggest an app or a service or how to do the whole list at one time. Also, how often do you think they should be mailing the people?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I'll also note that a web site for the business is a great idea if he doesn't do that. Of course, he will have to update and manage it. And for god's sake, BCC: those emails....

Use a mailing list, there are many suitable ones. Can't recommend any service, have not been involved in that area for a few years.
As for the suggestion to use BCC:, nope unless the goal is to get the emails tagged as spam quickly. A mailing list sends out individual emails with the response set to either the mailing list or other address for managing subscriptions.
Frequency? - unless there are many events each week sending out a monthly or bimonthly notice should be more than enough. Otherwise too frequent messages tend to get disposed of unread or marked as spam instead of unsubscribing.

The dominant folks are mailchimp and constant contact. They get past the ISP caps and the blacklists. Of course they police the content to be sure they do not fall afoul of the spam cops.
They also provide some very nice analysis and tools to see whether the emails are opened, etc.

I have 16 clients, half with mail chimp, half with ACT/swiftpages.
I build and send out at least 50 per month... mail chimp is by far the easiest. Its free up to a limit, otherwise you will need to pay.
I agree about a good web site. I think this one is really well done:
