Refinishing wood veneer

I've been using paste wax finish, after staining. I like the subtle sheen, as opposed to the wrapped-in-plastic look that poly can give, at least under my heavy hand.

thanks, folks, this is all great advice. honestly, I had not thought too much about the finish, but now I have to explore what you folks are suggesting.
