Israeli Apartheid?
#1
I worked in South Africa to reverse effects of apartheid, an indelible experience. And I also have a strong belief in the duty of humankind to always resist oppression of others. This article should be required reading for everyone with an interest in our ally Israel.

Israeli apartheid has been the "third rail" of American politics for generations and promises to be for the foreseeable future.

It would be a mistake to believe that all Israelis support the settlements and its structure in the West Bank.

In the words of many Sabras, it's 'those idiot Jews from New York' who are driving this. Also the importance of coalition politics with fanatics having sway over national policy is a main contributor to this. getting rid of Netanyahu is one step. Then the nutballs of the right have to be isolated and excluded from governing coalitions.

This is not as clear cut as it might be, what with Abbas now threatening to delay or cancel the May elections so Fatah can avoid a severe defeat at the hands of the genocidal Hamas.

Everybody is acting with ill will in this situation. It's unlike South Africa was.
A serious 2 state solution is needed, but nobody wants to get one.

maybe it's time for the UN to impose its will upon the region again... I dunno - this has always been the world's most unsolvable problem.

Who are they going to push around? They support the Palestinians unto the fourth generation in large 'camps' in foreign countries as well as under Hamas and in the West Bank.

They have a Human right Council that has condemnation of Israel as part of its permanent agenda (not kidding, it's locked on the calendar). Withdraw support? The hundreds of thousands of missiles held by Hezbollah and bigger ones in Iran are already aimed at Tel Aviv.

Plus, the UN women's rights body just elected Iran to its steering committee, so exactly when are they going to wise up?

Aggressively pushing all these parties around has not yielded any good results before. Expecting it to reverse now is wishful thinking.

I agree with you, this is so complex, and as hal mentioned, it's seemingly unsolvable. Around for our whole lives. I don't know if our better selves will ever prevail. The whole world seems to be favoring into authoritarian solutions in these times.

and to add to things The U.S. ambassador to Israel for the last four years appointed by former president Donald Trump was envoy David Friedman, a real estate lawyer with close ties to the settlement movement.

The new Biden ambassador Thomas Nides is expected to be named soon.
