On Saturday, news outlets have quoted Putin as saying that if Ukraine continues “to do what they are doing”—i.e. defend themselves against an aggressor—“they are calling into question the future of Ukrainian statehood.” Does this threat not demonstrate his intent to destroy a nation and now rise to the threshold for the definition of genocide? Additionally, If Ukraine’s fate is sealed, could a democratic country offer to annex it and, thereby, grant instant NATO membership/protection to their territory?

The existence of a nation and a group of people are separate things.

I don't think NATO would accept this. The question is pretty straight forward - does NATO enter into a war with Russia? The specifics are less important.
