185,000 pounds of Smithfield food precooked bacon toppings recalled for possible metal pieces

....Smithfield Packaged Meats Corp. is recalling more than 185,000 pounds of pre-cooked, ready-to-eat bacon topping products possibly contaminated with pieces of metal.

The company, headquartered in Sioux Center, Iowa, issued the voluntary recall Friday after a customer complained about finding metal in one of its bacon topping products, according to the Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

To date, there have been no confirmed injury reports or adverse reactions from the products, the FSIS said. But the agency wants consumers to check refrigerators and freezers for the product.

"Based on our investigation, we believe a very small volume of the total product recalled is potentially affected," Smithfield, the country’s largest pork processor

Smithfield has notified retailers and has "taken corrective action to address a mechanical failure we believe to be the cause of this incident," the company said.

The products were produced between Feb. 21and Feb. 23, 2022 and also March 3 to March 5, 2022.

The products were sold in stores in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, New Jersey, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin, Smithfield said.

Not quite a monopoly, but large. It and 3 other companies control about 75% of the pork processing in the US. Now a wholly owned subsidiary of a Chinese company.

Smithfield was a privately owned company...went private before, then one of the kids (family friend) bought it back, built it up more, then the kid sold to the Chinese.
