- The gunman opened fire at two campus locations — Berkey Hall, an academic building, and the nearby Michigan State University Union Building — with reports of shots fired beginning a little after 8:15pm Eastern.
- There were three deaths on scene, and least five people were taken to a hospital, all of them in critical condition.
- The hunt for the shooter is reported to have lasted hours, some reports of up to four hours, until police located the shooter, at which time he shot and killed himself.
- The gunman was a 43-year-old man who was not affiliated with the university.
- Police have not released the name of the shooter or determined the motive.
