Ah the classic oak desks of the 1910’s and 1920’s…. Because there’s no way a shamus in the post WWII days would be able to buy a new desk…
The tall drawer was a file drawer.
And above the pistol drawer was a pull out writing surface, which always had a coffee cup stain on it.
I actually have one of these desks -- my main computer desk. It has both the tall drawer with a file divider down the middle on one side, and the pull-out writing surfaces on both sides.
I bought it used at an antique dealer back in Cambridge... what attracted me to it was that someone had resurfaced the top in green felt and then put glass on top of that, which gives it a sort of 40's look. Anyone care to guess how old the desk might really be, and if there's any way for me to find out?
The manufacturer will often have stamped their name in an inconspicuous spot, usually either on the underside or back of one of the drawers, sometimes along with a model number. If you can find that and it was made by a major manufacturer, you'll probably be able to look up when it was originally made.
