Finally! E-File accepted!
#1
For the last few years, I have had problems e-filing my tax return.

Two years ago, I found a trick to make it go through.

Last year, it wouldn't work. Had to mail & got my refund way later than e-filing would have taken.

This year, I used FreeTaxUSA and had the same issue (previous year's AGI does not match IRS records).

Here's the thing: EVEN THOUGH I file jointly with my spouse, it (TurboTax) would ask for an AGI for me AND my spouse. But there is only ONE on a joint return.

Did some googling, and it said to try entering zero for spouse. That worked two years ago.

Last year, no combinations of AGI would work. Actual/Actual, Actual/0, 0/0. No joy. Finally said F it and mailed.

This year, it (i.e. FreeTaxUSA) only gave me ONE option for AGI (i.e., it only asked for one value, not two). So I entered it (actual AGI).

Rejected! (here we go again).

Tried many times. Always rejected.

So I decided to tell FTUSA that we filed singly last year. THEN it asked for TWO AGIs. It eventually took a combo (I think it was Actual/0).

But this is so f-ing frustrating! Why does the IRS look for TWO AGIs for a JOINT filer when they only have ONE? And then make you solve the puzzle of what to enter?

FWIW, HR Block only asked for one.

I also do taxes for an elderly friend, really simple but last year it would not accept her AGI. We also ended up mailing it in. This year it took the mailed-in number just fine.

You know it's not beyond the realm of possibility that this is an intentional "bug" to goad you into paying for the tax filing software/service.

I'd report your findings to the IRS Inspector General or whoever is supposed to be in charge of creating the free tax filing software for low income and simple returns.

This happened in 2022 & 2021 with TurboTax after I had paid for the service.

They don't care if you mail or efile. They get paid either way.
