This is true. Taking into account installation of a charger (or at least a 240V outlet), extra registration costs in some states, and occasional charging at commercial chargers (which are generally more expensive than gas), it usually takes a while to see any difference in fuel cost and is unlikely to ever cover the difference in vehicle cost (definitely not for those of us who like to lease). Overall environmental costs are also questionable considering the dirty processes for extraction and purification of rare earths but get to be more positive when focusing on local (non-China) environment. But there are a number of other advantages to driving an EV that definitely makes it worth it.
Let's skip the "environmental costs" for now.

One factor that you haven't mentioned is the ability to have electricity generation at home. Obviously, not everyone has that ability, like apartment or condo dwellers, and a lot of people who live in a house won't want to mess with it. But NO one has the ability to refine their own gasoline at home.

Good point. Although I am usually charging about 30-70 kWh overnight, and I am not sure how sustainable that is with solar panels, taking the rest of the house in account. But they could probably reduce the cost significantly.
