Would a Sony Clie be useful at College?
#1
I picked a Sony Clie PEG-NX70V at a yard sale yesterday for near nothing and I was just
wondering if something like this would be useful for my son that starts college this fall or
would it just make things more complicated? It has some small scuffs on its case but the
screen is fine. It came with the USB cradle, the wireless LAN Card PEGA-WL100, the plug
adapter for use w/o the Cradle, all the original papers, box and software. I didn't come wth
the audio remote. I'm going to get him a laptop before he goes off this fall so I just don't
want to send away with too many tech gadgets. It also looks like I could get decent money
for it.
Thanks!

BTW: Any games available for it?

I have one for 5 years or so. I use it for easy light fast access datebook and contact manager. Many numbers and dates that don't get into my cellphone. But if he has a bells and whistles cell, it may be of little use to him.

If he has a laptop, chances are he'll use little else. I went to college in the fall of 2000 with a Palm Pilot and my new G3 iMac. The Palm Pilot didn't make it out of the cardboard moving box until two years later when I was packing for my junior year. The iMac is sitting in our kitchen.

I have one of those, plus, two Psions, and one Newton 2000 - never used any of them hardly. Newton is the best, but for me, you just can't beat an iBook, PowerBook, or MacBook...

I loved my NX73 until it stopped workingSad

It's really neat looking because of the black case and the screen is a great size/resolution. Rotating camera lens is sweet.
I remember seeing them being used by the "NCIS" team.

I think its problem is just the battery.

I've been wondering if I should replace the battery and perhaps sell it? I've got all the accessories, including an external Belkin keyboard and a 2GB memory stick..

Is it worth anything?

The short battery life and bulky form factor put it in that strange middle ground. Too bulky to be pocketable, but not worth digging out of a messenger bag. Stick with a small laptop and a little black book :0)

I just sold my Clie (UX50) for pretty close to what I bought it for one year ago. Though I still carry a Tungsten E that has absolutely no extras except mp3 playback, and too slow for everything else. Just calendaring and notes to myself. Too slow to take notes for a class with a stylus or even hunt and peck keyboard.

GeneL, I think even if you attempted the battery repair, and it was not successful, that the parts would go for a pretty good price.

Based on the available batteries that I've seen online for my Clie´ NX73 it seems that there are "extended" batteries for not much more than the stock battery and they fit in the same space.

I already downloaded the replacement instructions quite a while ago, so I'm thinking it probably would be worth getting it to work again and, perhaps, sell it.

I forgot to mention I even have the wireless card that goes in the pop-up slot on the back of the Clie´ plus a beautiful leather case.

I guess I'll have to make this a projectBig Grin

Does it have one of those fancy retractable trays to hold your beer? If so, it will be useful in College.
