A friend brought me their sick iPod upon being plugged into a computer, the apple logo is shown, the hard drive spins and then the no battery indicator is shown very briefly before the display goes blank. Has anyone seen this before? I'm curious if replacing the battery would be worth it but perhaps the drive or logic board is shot.

My sisters iPod mini would come up to logo then restart. I was able to finally get it to mount and reformatted it. Worked great after that. In diagnostic mode it passed all the test.

Have you run the iPod through diagnostic mode? I recently had two iPods die within a week of each other and the diagnostics told me that the drive was dead (not as clearly as that, but I figured it out). I imagine that they would also help with your error.

i have seen where a battery is so bad that it won't hold enough charge, even when plugged in, to start up propertly.
could also be the logic board or hard drive. no easy assessment.
