HELP! What does holding down power button do during boot?
#1
My wife held the power button down on her pismo when starting it up, thinking she needed to hold it down til it chimed or lit up. It made a longer, loud buzzing noise (a deep beep). What did this do?

We are having issues now with airport reception (with had been excellent til now) now so I am trying to troubleshoot in a hampton inn here on the road.

Installs firmware upgrade, I think.

Would anything happen if there was not a firmware update to install?

No.

And the firmware update should be triggered by holding down both the Apple key and the power button at the same time. Did your wife touch any other keys on the keyboard?

Assuming that your wife triggered a firmware update event, when it found no update files on the hard drive, it wouldn't have done anything. You'd just have to hold down the power button again to power it down and then start up normally by briefly pressing the power button again.

If you're having WiFi reception problems, it's almost certainly something else.
