Curious..Has a poll been taken on MacBook air buyers?
#1
Has anyone asked how many people here are going to buy a macbook air?

Just curious after reading macrumors blog and 900 yeas and 1200 nays on liking the new computer.

Don't believe it until you see Apple keeping the product on or shelving it.

Engadget had a poll as well, albeit these self-selected polls don't mean all that much: http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/15/poll-...cbook-air/

The Air Book is the quintessential First Gen product. There will be your usual early adopters and fashionistas that buy it. It will mostly just languish like AppleTV last year. I expect a high amount of product placement if the strike ever ends. I think/hope maybe the the next model will work out some of the big issues like the battery. This thing needs to be more like the Duo in every sense. That was a great machine, just 15 years ahead of it's time.

A poll on this forum might reveal the percentage of cheapskates. (Tongue)

It's funny: the dweebs on Engadget went on for years and years about how Apple needed an ultra-light to compete with stripped-down, expensive models from Sony and whoever else. Now that they have one, they're complaining it'll never sell. (Shrug)

Laptop docks are inelegant and clunky and becoming irrelevant with all the wireless options we have today, let alone future options (wireless USB or Firewire). Just plug in the external display via Micro-DVI adapter and pair your Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and your MacBook Air is "docked".

I don't think the MacBook Air will be a failure, but it doesn't serve a very large demographic IMO.

Silencio, I think your assessmt is correct. I frankly don't understand the thinking behind the computer other than making it thin and light. I don't understand the Ethernet add-on external. Soldered RAM and battery.

Guess they can make more money on the RAM because you have to upgrade for $$. I noticed so many programs were add-ons at a price. This really frosts me. I had in the past with PCs at lease received Restore Disks with my laptops. Sony made me pay $20 for restore disks....Apple computers don't have the software anymore. Money ,money money.....Pretty soon if you want your computer in a case - that will be extra, keyboard extra.....etcetc.

I think the thing will sell like the proverbial hot cakes but as a fashion item. I don't think the soldered memory or the battey really matter at all to a huge number of users. I have never bought a new battery for a laptop and 2gb of ram is enough for pretty much anything except video processing and serious number crunching. I don't think road warriors will buy it - its too big (bigger than the 12"pb and way bigger than the smallest pcs) and it has a glossy screen. Yes its lighter that a mbp but it is not in the ultralight category. Large businesses won't authorize it (or any other macbook for that matter) because of the built-in camera. But its will still sell as fast as they can ship it just because it's sexy. If there was a matt version, I might very well spring for it too. But glossy is the deal breaker here.
