Baby boom? Over 4 million babies were born in the U.S. in 2006, the largest number since 1961.

No, just a reflection of the fact that the US population is now close to 300 million, and was about 150 million then. Add in that you are starting to see the second boomlet as the baby boomers have grandchildren. First boomlet was in the '80's as they had children.
