I have two semi-non-working iPods. I'm wondering if I can morph something to make them to make one that is functional.
iPod # 1 20 gig. Refurb. Starts but gives the sad Mac after a few seconds. Display works fine. Battery is good.
10 gig click wheel Firewire. Good drive, but the display is junk. iTunes recognizes it.
Can the drive from the clicker be installed into the 20 gig? Any iPod techs here, formal or informal?
Thanks!

I have a 20GB 4th gen that's acting up and I believe it's the logic board. Problem is it seems that's a pretty common problem as well as HDD issues, bioth of which exceed the value of the working iPod.
Your question though - I believe you should be able to swap the smaller drive into the 20 GB. I tried a 40 GB 3rd gen drive in my 20 GB and, while I couldn't close the case, I was able to ascertain that the HDD was not causing the problem I was having. If the 10GB drive is thinner, you may want to shim it to keep it from rattling around. They used a foam padding on mine.
Also, you might be able to swap the screen into the 10GB - or not.

a firewire ipod and a 4th gen ipod don't use the same screen.
the hard drives should be almost exactly the same thickness.
you may need to swap the blue rubber bumpers around.
don't use metal tools to open them unless you want to really bugger up the cases.

I swapped them .. iTunes recognized the reassembled unit. I charged it for a while and pulled it off ... then ...it gave me the same sad Mac that it did before. I guess it must be a bad board or something?
