Internet funky in Chicago area??

I'm on on a PC at work and our provider is AT&T. I've only been able to get on the net using AOL. Pretty scary. Firefox and IE can't connect for some reason. Am I going to have to move out Californey way?? I hear tell they got lots of internet out there in that Silicon Valley. Far as the eye can see...

Mine has been extra-ordinarily slow. I am also in the Chicago area (Near-west suburbs) and on AT&T DSL. Bleah.
