Can I use a G3 iBook instead for....?

[quote Jimmypoo]Get ARD and you can use a Pismo. Surely someone has loaded Leopard on a "lesser" machine via Target Mode, yes??

I've not done it yet with my Pismo, but it runs Tiger just fine, and it's a G3/400, and I see no reason why it can't handle Leopard if it can handle Ubuntu.
Is Remote Access a free d/l from Apple or does it cost something? As you can tell, I'm trying to do this on the cheap (very cheap)!

The Pismo is a bit bigger than what I'm looking for. I used to have one and it was great, but a bit big.

What about a clamshell iBook? I guess those are a bit on the large side as well.

I've seen Leopard loaded on "lesser" machines by editing the processor checking code, so that it can be installed directly, no TDM needed...

You're going to need at least a G3/800 with at least 384 if RAM; you'll find that some sites are very boggy and you have to close other applications to hope to stream video smoothly (you won't always be able to) but it will be surprisingly workeable for the use you describe.
Tiger will run beautifully.
I wouldn't recommend anything less.

Okay, that's very good to know. I was starting to get confused on what to get, but if I can somehow narrow down my specs, it will be easier.

Thanks again.

If you don't have one yet, then I would definitely suggest better than a Pismo.

Yeah . . . try to use a Pismo to play back a downloaded TV show, or stream video from a news website. I don't see how it would be remotely possible considering my G3 iBook could only do it if you set it to "better performance" and closed other apps.

If you were only going to use it for controlling another computer, but not watch what streams from it, It would OK. But the video from Apple Remote Desktop, even in gray, can get choppy.

[quote C(-)ris]Ah, the 12" G4 powerbooks are all the AlBooks. They pull a hefty price premium. You MIGHT be able to get a 12" 867mhz G4 Powerbook for $300 if you search ebay religiously. The ones I were referring to are all 15" models.
Snagged a 12" Powerbook G4 867MHz with 128MB RAM off eBay for $188.

Just need to up the RAM and I'll install Leopard and see how it works.
