Ready to buy my first plasma tv... advice.

[quote zero]First advice: DONT BUY A PLASMA

buy LCD
What do you care? LOL

It looks like those of who already made our choice are taking it personally, as though we have to promote and defend the type we bought. Then impose that view on others.

Keep in mind, once you make a choice between LCD or Plasma, you're obligated to then turn around and immediately impose your view on those who haven't chosen a model yet.

If you're not willing to promote the choice you made as the ONLY choice anyone should ever consider, you might not be allowed to buy one. Make sure they don't make you sign something promising you'll join the cult and defend the brand. That fine print can catch up with you!

Quite right. Plasmas were far and away superior when I bought mine back in 2005, but I have no idea who's on top (if either of them are) right now. Haven't been out looking at TVs enough to have an informed opinion.

Best advice anybody can give you is, get out there, look for yourself, and trust your own eyes. Pick the screen your eyes like the best, not the one with the longest feature list or best "ratings."

I got a fairly cheap LCD almost two years ago that has a viewing angle of 180 so I kinda figured that viewing angle is not even an issue anymore.
So, if you're looking directly at the edge of the TV, you can see the picture?

www.avsforum.com!!!! Figure out what tv you want, then go on the website and look up the thread of your exact choice. They break it down, hard.

Personally, I would buy a plasma. Get what you can afford. 720 is really good enough for most everybody.

The blacks are weaker on LCD.

If you play a lot of games, the tv is in a very bright room or like to pause the tv and walk away, get a LCD.

Get a Coke. No, Pepsi. No, Coke. No wait, get a Pepsi. If you like it on ice, get a Coke. If you like bubbles, get a Pepsi. No wait, I mean, Coke. If you like to feel young, get a Pepsi. If you like sweetness, get a Coke. Get a...

Less filling! ...Wait I thought this thread was about the Prius. Big Grin

As far as the resolution, Will is correct that there is no 1080p broadcast and probably never will be. However, there IS 1080i broadcast which is the same resolution, only interlaced instead of progressive. So there is a reason to get a TV which can display 1080 (either i or p) even if you're only watching broadcast material. (If it can do 1080p then it can do 1080i but the opposite isn't always true.)
