Bigger problems now- HD giving out?
#11
[quote btfc] Do you have a bootable external hard drive? If so, install DW, update it, and run it.
Unfortunately, I do not. I thought that maybe I could run DW over my network, but either I did something wrong or it isn't possible. I connected to the laptop from my Sawtooth and mounted the iBook drive but when I went to run DW, it didn't show the iBook HD as an option (I have 4 HDs in the Sawtooth and they all showed up).

Is there a special sequence I should follow that might make that work?

Version 3 works on an iBook! You just have to download an update from Alsoft and make a new disk. Version 4 is for Intels. I think you can do this. (If not I have a version 4 and will just overnight it to you.) PM me, ok?

"Version 3 works on an iBook!"

http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/supportdw3.html

"Alsoft still has the DiskWarrior 3.0.3 CD Update available. This free updater allows owners of DiskWarrior 3.0, 3.0.1 or 3.0.2 to create a new startup CD containing the updated DiskWarrior application. To help you determine if you need to order an upgrade to DiskWarrior 4 or download the DiskWarrior 3.0.3 CD Update, please choose the scenario below that applies to you:

If you already own DiskWarrior 3 (your CD is gold and white with the image of the DiskWarrior shield on it) AND...

...your current DiskWarrior CD will not start up your Mac, you will need to upgrade to DiskWarrior 4. Using the DiskWarrior 3.0.3 CD Update will NOT create a CD that will start up your Mac if your current DiskWarrior CD cannot.

...your current DiskWarrior 3 CD will start up your Mac, and you have access to a CD burner, download and use the free DiskWarrior 3.0.3 CD Update. In order to use the DiskWarrior 3.0.3 CD Update, you will need your original DiskWarrior 3.0 or 3.0.1 CD, a Macintosh computer running Mac OS X 10.2.1 or later equipped with a CD burner, a blank CD-R disc, 650 MB of free disk space, and an administrator name and password.

DiskWarrior 3.0.3 CD Update

The DiskWarrior 3.0.3 CD Update is a free updater that will allow you to create a new startup disk with the updated DiskWarrior application on it. If you cannot use the update (i.e. you do not have your original DiskWarrior 3 CD, a Macintosh computer running Mac OS X 10.2.1 or later, or a CD burner, etc.), you will need to purchase an upgrade to DiskWarrior 4.

The updater will not update the version of Mac OS X on your CD. The CD created by the updater will start up the same Mac models as your original DiskWarrior 3.x CD. It will not be able to start up new Mac models that your current CD cannot start up. To learn how to check your CD revision, click here."

Another suggestion: boot the iBook into target disk mode, connect it to the Quicksilver, and do Diskwarrior from there. That's probably faster than the update process that Gutenberg suggests.

> I downloaded the 10.4.11 combo updater from Apple's site and reinstalled it.

If you've already reinstalled the 10.4.11 update then reinstalling again won't help.

Try safe-booting once (as described above in my post about reinstalling) and then restart right after you log in. It's the easiest fix for beachballs and is often overlooked because it's so easy.

> Can I just remove the .pkg file from the security update on the 22nd? Will that help anything?

That won't help. It doesn't do anything critical. It's just a reference for other installers and for the DU during permissions-repairs.

...

Take a peek at the SMART status of that drive in the DU. SMART status should appear at the bottom of the DU window when you select the drive-icon. If it says anything other than "Verified" please report the message here.

I agree that you should see what DW turns up. Target mode should work.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661

If DW and the DU turn nothing up and you are certain that the symptoms appeared only after performing the security update then you should consider doing an archive and install of the OS.

Ok, the DW 3.0.3 update won't help me because my original DW disk won't start the iBook. I get a kernel panic on bootup.

SMART status is verified.

I'll give the Target disk mode a shot tomorrow. It is really difficult for me to get to the FW port on the Sawtooth, so it is going to take some maneuvering I am not up for at this hour. Smile

Thanks again for the help everyone, can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

I'll post back tomorrow and let you know where I'm at.
