Best way to remove hook tab from video card?
#1
Looking to install 128MB ATI Radeon 9600 card in MDD FW800, but G4 has power ( ? ) slots both fore and aft of the AGP slot... OEM 9000 card used front power slot and has hook tab closer to AGP pin set. Hook tab on 9600 card is where back power slot is, so either the hook, or the slot has to go... So, assuming it's gonna be the hook that goes; what is the recommended procedure for removing it? fine bladed hacksaw? score and snap? dremel cutoff wheel? maybe just cut off hook part and allow pin-free tab to use back slot for add'l support? though that may actually take more handiwork than cutting off the whole thing...
Regular, dual boot MDD does not have back power slot, so 128MB 9600 card works fine in them, and 256MB 9600 card doesn't have hook tab, so it's not a problem in either rev of the MDD.

Score & snap seems like the easiest route, but [obviously] would need to do so w/o cracking the card itself, and am not familiar w/ the perils of such an attempt. (unless someone wants to swap a tab-free 256MB 9600 card [or even a tab-free 128MB 9800 card] for the hook tabbed 9600 to avoid the attempt... )
Thanks,

Side cutters work great.

I would use an abrasive dremel wheel.

I've done literally hundreds of them. Side cutters work GREAT. Smile

So, Jamie, are we talking large enough diagonal cutters to get the whole tab in a single cut? or a smaller plier that mostly nibbles away at the board? the ATI tech implied it was OK to do it, but he couldn't 'recommend' the procedure, therefore he couldn't advise on how to do it; only advice he gave was to be careful not to crack the board... also, any scoring before cutting to prevent cracking?

thanks,

Only problem I see with the dremel tool is the dust. A person has to make sure you get it completely removed.
