Last Saturday the only outlet over the kitchen counter went out. I tried the obvious fixes but it wasn't a tripped circuit breaker. Everything was never on at the same time, but this outlet fed the coffee maker, toaster oven, microwave, dishwasher, & a neon transformer that provided light over the sink.
Today a buddy came over & we discovered that the wire that fed this outlet was original to the house (1940) & had become very brittle & apparently broke somewhere along the line. We fed a new piece of romex down from the attic to the outlet & wired it into a junction box. I now have electricity again!
I'd been using a heavy duty extension cord stretched across the floor to make coffee & nuke food but I knew it was only a matter of time before I tripped over it & did some serious damage to myself. This was a more involved fix than I'd hoped to have to do since I'll be closing with the Airport Authority on Oct 7 & moving out soon after that. It's interesting that I originally closed on this house on Oct 7, 2005. Three years of home ownership. sigh...
