I can find stuff faster online than on my computer

I have stopped saving articles to my hd. It is much, much faster to Google it again than go though the agony of Spotlight. Something isn't right.

You're correct, your CompuTron is hosed, fix it.
SpotLight works fine on mine.
Six (6) 1TB HDD's, all indexed.

You can rebuild Spotlight's cache with Onyx or switch to (the free) EasyFind.
