Canon iP3300 won't print unless color tanks aren't empty...workarounds??
#1
I have a beautiful Pixma iP3300 printer that I can't get to print even in black and white because the COLOR tanks are low. I've tried telling it to "Print Grayscale" in my media settings, but it keeps coming back and telling me it can't print.

So I went to OfficeMax, and purchased their own brand of ink cartridges...seeing the "iP3000" designation on the package. I assumed that they would work with the Canon iP3000 FAMILY of printers, as Canon has always done. WRONG. Took those back, and assumed that it was an OfficeMax brand issue.

Went to Sam's, and bought a package of "GENUINE Canon Ink" for the iP3000 family. Brought it home, and they didn't work. After calling Canon, I found out that the iP3000 and iP3300 are completely different, and I'm now stuck with an opened package of $50 ink cartridges. This is crap!

I'm trying to think of workarounds...these cannot be refilled, according to Walgreens and OfficeMax, and the agent at Canon told me it's because there's a "drop counter" in the IC board on the tank. If you refill it, it won't work, because the tank "knows how many drops are in it." He did tell me if you hold the button on the printer down for 10-15 seconds, it MIGHT reset the counter.

I'm thinking about drilling a hole in the tank and filling the color tanks with water, then resetting. The sad part is that I've got three black tanks that I can't use because of the stupid color tanks.

I rarely print in color, but someone else in the house (to remain unnamed) has continued to print in color even after being asked not to. Otherwise, my printer would still be working!!

Here's a link to manually reset the EEPROM.

Canon IP 3300 Manual resetter

EERPSOM Reset Procedure

Try to enter service mode and reset EEPROM:

1. Start with the printer OFF
2. Hold down RESUME and then hold down POWER
3. release RESUME
4. press RESUME twice, then release POWER
5. Let green light blink until printer is done moving print head.

Now you should be in service mode.

6. Press RESUME 1 time then POWER to execute the command
This will print head test print. Just if you want to check clogging problems in depth.

7.Press RESUME 2 times then POWER to execute the command
This will print EEPROM information ink usage etc.

8. Press RESUME 3 times then POWER to execute the command
This will reinitialize (reset) EEPROM

9. Press RESUME 2 times then POWER to execute the command
This will print EEPROM information once more, you should compare it with your fist print. All zeroes should be all over the place.
That means your EEPROM is reset.

Use with your own risk

Not sure if this is applicable to your Canon, but on Brother aio printers, the low ink levels are seen optically- when the sensor can see clear through the tank, it (she?) knows there's no mo ink in thar. When I needed to fax out on that machine but was locked out because of the low ink warning, I found the trick of covering the optical sensor at each tank w/a little pc of masking tape, to fool the system.

in the long run it may be better to get a cheap laser when you find a deal, keep an eye here or on slickdeals, sometimes you get a laser for like $25 after rebate.

Since I got my brother laser, I rarely fire up the Canon inkjet.

Agree with space-time.... Staples currently has the Brother HL-2140 laser for $49 in store. I've been using the HL-2070N (networkable) for over a year on the same toner cartridge and love it!

NO one has mentioned the solution in this thread yet. There is no need for a work around. Simply press the "OK" button on the printer itself, and the document will print.

take care,

Chris
