How can I use my fastmail.fm account with my own domains?
#1
Hello,

I renewed one domain through http://www.godaddy.com/ and also went ahead and bought a couple of other domains for a 5 year period.

My email is currently through http://www.fastmail.fm/. Although they have changed their membership levels and features, I am on the level that used to be a $15 one time fee.

I know that there are many things listed under "Options" in my fastmail account related to domain names, etc., but I don't really quite understand them.

Can anybody explain what I can use my renewed/new domain names for in conjunction with my fastmail account?

This topic is partly in reference to previous threads:

Pinkoos,

Sounds to me like e-mail forwarding from your domain to your fastmail.fm account will do the trick. Not sure how it works in Godaddy but with other domain providers, e-mail forwarding is included free of charge with the domain name registration. You just need to configure it via the domain name provider, in this case, Godaddy.com.

you should be abel to set up a forwarding rule that says something along these lines:

Forward *@ to Whateveryouremailaddressis@fastmail.fm.

At that point, any mail sent to your domain name based e-mail address should be forwarded to your fastmail address.

GoDaddy.com should have instructions for this, assuming they offer e-mail forwarding.

Fastmail provides other methods of using your domain name with their services but this is the easiest method.

BTw, depending on the amount and type of mail you get, the level of service you have with Fastmail right now may prove inadequate. If you get lots of pictures and such via e-mail, you will likely need to upgrade your account.

Thanks for the reply, Robert M.

I think I'm just pretty dense when it comes to this. And, at least for me, Godaddy's help section is very thorough, but it's not clear to me what help section I need to use.

I'm not sure if I need to set up an email "account" first and then setup email "forwarding" or if I just set up "forwarding."

On top of that, although I've registered the domains for 5 years, it's telling me that the email accounts, forwarding, etc. will expire in 1 year, which doesn't make sense.

Maybe this is the point at which I just use Google Apps for Domains to take care of this issue.

Pinkoos,

I'd contact GoDaddy and ask them where to find instructions for e-mail forwarding.

You will also want to specify your default reply to address in fastmail, so stuff goes back to godaddy too.

[I don't have a domain so can't help you there]

I use fastmail and I also had to set up a forwarding rule through godaddy.
The site is a nightmare to figure out. I doubt writing to them will get you a useful response. That's why they're the cheapest.

Anyways, it was such a confusing process that I'm already fuzzy even though it was fairly recent, but you do in fact have to purchase some sort of a "pack" and then use your little credit tokens to buy the e-mail address to use as a forward.
This stuff is included with other registrars (such as DirectNIC which I've been using for years).

To set the alias on teh fastmail end you have to go to "options" and then select "virtual domains" under "settings" to get to the controls you need. Guessing it's going to be trial and error from there.

Okay, thanks. Not looking forward to doing this!
