25% Dell Small Biz coupon works for Hauppauge HD PVR
#1
In case anyone is interested, the 25% off coupon mentioned on today's Dealmac worked with the Hauppauge HD PVR. The coupon is for Dell Small Business (anyone can sign up for an account), and is for "select desktop and laptop accessories". The best price I had found was at Amazon for $209. Dell had it for $239, but with the coupon it was $179. Shipping was free too, but I did have to pay tax.

For those not aware, the HD PVR is a box that, among other things, will let you "extract" HD content from devices like a DirecTV HD DVR and save them to your computer. The latest version of EyeTV works with it and will allow you to burn HD content onto a standard DVD, which will play in HD on a Blu-Ray player.

Note that while it does HD it only will do component video, not HDMI. So your resolution will be limited to 720p (or is it 1080i?) And this device exploits the "analog hole" that some content owners feel may be unethical. The fact that with Windows you can get it to pump out an AVHCD dual layer DVD with 1.5 hours of video playable in a BD player is interesting.

The HD PVR can record H.264 compressed video at up to 1080i resolution in real time, complete with AAC and Dolby Digital audio support.

This is a really great product. Had one for nearly a year now. Check Steven Toth's HDPVR Capture Mac application, which I prefer to EyeTV (you'll have to buy one or the other, the box doesn't ship with a Mac driver or recording app):

Picture quality is outstanding, and Steve has the app pretty well tweaked for 5.1 audio (AC3) as well. His app pushes the video into an .mp4 container that can be edited in MPEG Streamclip (save as a .mov, for some reason you lose audio if you save as an .mp4), all without reencoding.

Oh, and the "content owners" can KMA if they don't like me ripping video that I pay for so I can have it on my server.
