Are we charge air time for listening to our voice mail?

As it's part of the data plan, I'm not sure if that time is "free".

I am grandfathered with unlimited data on the original iPhone.

You could probably do some experiments to figure it out.

I do know that using normal AT&T phones your get charged for the call to check voice mail (they don't even consider it a Mobile-to-Mobile number).

If you're signed up for online bill access and look at your call usage, do you see calls for when you were checking voice mail? If you're using minutes it will show there.

If your turn off the data access on the iPhone can you still check voice mail? That would probably tell you if it uses data access or airtime for the visual voice mail.

No vvm is transmitted as data. If you call your vm then it is airtime and charged

so what happens if you call your vm from another iPhone, is it m-t-m and therefore free???
