want to use Apple 20" Aluminum display with VGA computer. Possible?

This outputs ADC. Then you'd also need a DVI extractor to get the DVI signal only (another $25ish).

There are VGA to DVI signal boxes, as noted. Just that this may be a cheaper route.

So a $50 video card is frowned upon, but a fragile dongle/converter chain is preferred. Why even buy a tower? Businesses are not very smart.

I'm with you 100%, but this giant (for our area) organization would rather keep their machines locked-down and easier to maintain by not installing lots of extra hardware internally. So we go the only route that will work for the situation.

This is why critcism of the Mac mini and other "closed" systems of its ilk are always misguided. Businesses do not upgrade their systems and neither does the average home user.
