Let's say I download a binary and I end up with a folder with a series of rar files AND a series of par files. What is the appropriate procedure then to put it all back together?

There are applications available for Linux that will re-assemble the PAR files. I don't know what to tell you for a combination of he two.

Get yourself a copy of MacPar Deluxe and Split&Concat and you'll be covered for most usenet binaries. Then just click on the PAR file and everything should join and extract automagically.

And in the case of a missing .par file, often simply clicking on an .rar file (maye the first one sequentially) will work just as well.

Agree with all of the above. I also occasionally use UnRarX, but most of the time MPD and S&C are my go-to apps.
