Can't send mail - Get the following error message
#1
"This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered.

Verify that you have addressed this message correctly. Check your SMTP server settings in Mail Preferences and verify any advanced settings with your system administrator."

Is this a mail issue or a bellsouth.net issue?

Any ideas what is wrong - I have received mail

This has happened to me.

I don't know the cause. It cleared up without my changing anything.

I repaired permissions twice, shut down mail and computer - restart.

When I restart mail, some of the emails holding in the box send automatically. When I try to do a new one, it hangs with the same message.

When I shut down Safari (my bellsouth account is on safari) it resends, also

It's probably a mail server problem.

Mail servers have a finite number of connections allowed. When a server reaches that number, attempted connections will be denied or will generate an error message. Incoming (pop) and outgoing (smtp) connections are treated differently so you may be able to receive mail, but not send it at the same time.

Try to send it again 10 minutes later and it'll probably go through.

I've had that with verizon, too.
10 / 15 minutes later the outbox will be empty.

first time I was able to rx but not tx I had worked off-line then connected.
Didn't work off-line again for months. :-)

Deco,

Exactly the same thing and message occurred to me recently. Mine was a reply to a group mail with a bad address in the bunch. I hand deleted each address back to the originator then used the drop down menu to Edit > Delete. That worked for me.

Good Luck!
