Typical Graphic Designer rates

I'm working on a new project involving GUI, splash screen and icon design. Looking to hire an experienced designer but wondering what to expect as far as pay rate. One designer I've made contact with is charging $85/hr. Thoughts?

Good designers can be expensive, bad ones even more so...

depends on your market, among other things. In my area (university town of about 50,000), we work with designers that charge anywhere from $50-$150/hr. So, to me, $85 sounds reasonable for a good designer.

That sounds about right. Make sure you look over thier portfolio so you know you are going to get what you want.

as a designer, its been my experience that people want me to do it for free. You just hit the "design" button right?
