Cat claws may be able to ruin any upholstery and disembowel the local wildlife, but cannot scratch glass.

imagine a cat using its claws prior to touching the glass.
now, imagine that something could become embedded in the paws or surrounding area. now, imagine that something possesses a hardness equal to or greater than the surface of the iPad. (not sure what the exact surface layer is comprised of on the iPad, personally) now, then, it seems perfectly within the realm of possibility that the cat, could indeed scratch the iPad.
