After upgrading the new G5 to Tiger, it can no longer connect to my old workhorse machine, which runs 9.1. Any way around this?
Can Tiger network with OS 9.1?

There's no reason for such a problem to arise from an upgrade to 10.4 from 10.3.
In all likelihood, there's an issue with file sharing or networking on the old Mac. Double check that TCP/IP file sharing is enabled in the File Sharing control panel and check all of your cables. If that's not it, you'll need to provide more information about your setup -- what kind of network do you have going there? Using a router? What kind? Which model Mac is running 9.1? Have you performed any other upgrades recently on either Mac? Does either one have trouble connecting to the 'net?

MacMagus, he may be referring to that, starting with Tiger, I believe X does not use AFP. So if you try connecting to an OS9 networked drive from Tiger, you get an error message (don't recall the exact one, something about an incompatible AFP or something). The solution is to connect using the IP address, rather than the machine name... at least that's what I remember.
Edit: yep, here's the detail-- http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/...c3035.html

That's true of 10.4, but it's also true that AppleShare discovery doesn't work from 10.3 onward, so Mr Downtown should have been connecting via IP address already. As I said, TCP/IP filesharing should have been enabled on the OS 9 Mac. But you're correct that I should have specified that he connect using the IP address and the Connect to Server option from the Go menu in the Finder.

If you can believe it...I have been using 10.4.6 and can still connect to an OS 8.6 box (old Beige G3) that is still running a webserver (WebStar). It just shows up in my network when I click 'Browse' (or directly type in the IP addy). Volumes mount just fine from the 8.6.

Thanks to PeterB and others. It was the AFP issue, and the fix was simple. I just turned on the TCP/IP option on the OS9 machine, and after a restart the G5 can see it just like before.

Mr Downtown, glad to have helped ... and I am pretty sure that the problem did start with Tiger -- Panther doesn't have a problem connecting to OS8/OS9 machines (see macintouch link). Dunno why Apple did this... it's a real pain... I've found that even turning on the TCP/IP option still doesn't allow me to connect via the Finder without specifying the IP.
