Affordably Run Win App One time (uses USB Cradle) on Intel Mac?
#1
Hi,

We need to run an application one time on our Mac Pro. It runs under Vista, Win XP or Win 7. This is the link to the
download/install page.

It downloads (and runs?) a file named
"setup.exe".

It uses a USB Cradle (bio feedback) and communicates with a program run on a remote computer via the Web.

Their tech support said it would run on a Mac with bootcamp, virtual pc or parallels.

Is there a way to run this one time (under 2 hours) without purchasing expensive software?

If so how complex is the installation and set-up?

Thanks!

Sure. Download a trial of parallels or vmware or just use virtual box http://www.virtualbox.org/
Find someone with an install DVD of windows 7 and install the OS as a virtual machine. Don't activate it.
Run your program.

I'll second Crossover, or another trial version of an app, or VirtualBox which is free.

Can't you just use a Ouija Board?

Thanks. I tried it and used it to run the "setup.exe" file I downloaded. It completed created a c_drive and a bottle but I can't figure out what to do next. The only thing in the Applications Tab is: "Crossover HTML engine".

Because I don't have a Windows Disc and because it sounds like a major install I'd strongly prefer a solution that doesn't require a Win install.

Thanks. I probably need to look at VirtualBox.

Thanks. When you don't have any idea what you are talking about its generally a good idea not to say anything.

It uses the same technology as lie detectors. Sounds like if you are ever accused of a crime and you are innocent you'd choose a Ouija Board over a lie detector?

Thanks!

Mitch, I'm afraid that if it requires Windows, you are going to have to find some way to install the Windows operating system on the computer you wish to connect it to.

The easiest method may be to borrow or rent a Windows laptop for your brief test. Heck, go to Starbucks, find a starving college student using a Windows laptop, and ask them if you can hire them to help you test this gizmo for a couple of hours for $40.

I've arranged to borrow a WinXP install DVD.

Thanks!

Hi,

Crossover results:
When I tried to install the application, in the log file there was a message that there was an error due to MS .NET 3.0 missing. I eventually figured out how to get an error free install of MS .NET 3.0. But I still couldn't get the application to install.

Parallels/MS XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 DVD results:
After installing Parallels and MS XP and the Parallels tool set the OS would boot with some error messages that I had no idea how to correct. Then after about 30 seconds it would crash.

After crash number three or four I gave up (I have no interest in learning how to trouble shoot MS XP) and we have arranged to borrow a PC.

Thanks for all the help!

Best Wishes,

Mitch
