Sainthood is recognition of a some miracle ( several actually) , not recognition for a management style or job well done.

billb's on the right track, I think. The speed w/ which this all went down was an homage to JP2 in general and his funeral in particular where a million people (?) chanted "Sancto Subito" - "sainthood now" - during the ceremony in St, Peter's Square. Canonization happens through the long "process" or by "spontaneous acclamation" - a form of which was demonstrated at the funeral. My understanding is that "spontaneous acclamation" hasn't happened in centuries and JP2's funeral was as close as it's come for a very long time. Seems in keeping w/ the tradition - such as it is.

...and for all the Latin 101 aficionados out there, it should read "Santo Subito".
