"THIS CABLE WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO CONNECT YOUR COMPUTER'S VGA PORT TO THE COMPONENET INPUT ON YOUR HDTV unless your video card supports component out function through it's VGA port (please confirm with your video cards documentation before purchasing)"

Probably won't work with an Apple video card. The card has to be designed for use with simple VGA to Component cables.

I finally remembered the product you want: http://www.hdfury.com/

Monoprice used to sell them, but not anymore, but you can still read the user reviews on the original DVI->VGA/Component HDFury http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011402&p_id=4559&seq=1&format=2

Thanks for the additional suggestions. The product that Gareth remembered looked really interesting, until I saw the price:

HD fury3 Basic Kit: $249 USD

Actually, I ran over to Best Buy on my way home from a doctor's appointment and bought a WD TV Live Plus. It was only $80 and I have 30 days to return it if it doesn't meet my needs.

Funny timing. Just after reading your suggestions I saw the following offer from Meritline, but the code had already been used up. How does this model differ from the one I bought???

Refurbished Western Digital WDBAAN0000NBK - TV Live HD Media Player $59.99 (Item# 170-492-001)

$59.99 w/Code: MLC6G8AXNL1 For First 200 Orders (This code also applies to some other items in this email. Get more savings with just 1 code input)

Anyway, it will take me several days before I can manage to do the install. I'll report back after I do…

… and THANKS again for all your input !!!

The stock AppleTV or the WDTV Live has a built-in web browser. You can hack a 1st generation AppleTV to install a web browser. This will give you access to some internet video via Boxee. There's also a lot of video content offered by Apple free of charge - video podcasts and select TV shows.

Err, I should have type NEITHER the stock AppleTV nor the WDTV Live has a built-in web browser.

Sorry about that.
