Facebook Changes Privacy Settings to Enable Facial Recognition
#1
http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/06/07...cognition/

"Facebook is pushing the privacy line once again, according to a new report from a security and antivirus company.

According to the report, from Sophos, Facebook recently began changing its users’ privacy settings to automatically turn on a facial recognition feature that detects a user’s face in an image. Once the person’s face is detected, the Web site then encourages Facebook friends to tag them. Facebook introduced this feature last year for its North American users; it is now rolling it out globally.

Facebook also doesn’t give users the option to avoid being tagged in a photo; instead, people who don’t want their name attached to an image must untag themselves after the fact."

I have to stop and laugh hysterically whenever anyone mentions the words "Facebook" and "Privacy" in the same sentence.

Facebook is an environment that encourages one to share all with everyone. Anyone who even remotely thinks that anything they do on the interwebs is private is, at best, naive.

There is absolutely nothing on my FB page that I would care if anyone knew about (outside of maybe... maybe a PM message or two. Even then, I'm not a US Senator so no biggie. It's the people that are so self important as to care if anything about them leaks out that I find interesting. That said, I don't advertise my address or phone number on my page.

8 steps!

From the Account menu in the upper right corner of your profile, chose Privacy Settings.
Underneath the list of your current privacy settings, click "Customize settings."
Scroll down to "Things others share" section.
Next to "Photos and videos I'm tagged in" click "Edit settings."
From the "Edit settings" prompt that appears on your screen, use the drop-down menu to choose "Customize."
In the "Custom Privacy" prompt that appears, you will see a drop down menu next to "These people."
From the "These people" menu, you have the option of choosing who can see photos via your tagged name. You can set it to "Only me" or you can add specific Facebook friends who are permitted see those photos via your tagged name. Here, you also have the option of preventing specific Facebook friends seeing photos via your tagged name.
Save this option. As with other Facebook privacy settings, you can change it at any time. You just have to do it.
