PSA: change your car's cabin A/C filter

I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to a lot of routine maintenance. Case in point, I didn't even know until about a month back that my family van had an A/C filter in it. Long story short, got one from Amazon for about $12 and changed it in less than 15 minutes (many helpful how-to vids on YouTube). The A/C is blowing like it's brand new.

this is probably the air filter, doesn't matter if you turn the AC on or off. It;s just an air filter so polen and dust doesn't come in in the car. I have on in a 2001 civic and love it, I don't have one in my older civic and I miss it a lot. takes me 3 minutes to change. take glove box out, take filters out, wipe plastic frame, put new filters in, insert back into the car, replace glove box. OK, maybe 5 minutes.

It is amazing how much junk (leaves and dust) gets trapped in that thing...and how difficult it can be to find replacements. They often aren't stocked in auto parts stores.

Our dealer wanted $65.... about $20 at auto parts store.

As with other types of automotive filters, it's possible the A/C filters available at an aftermarket auto parts store are significantly inferior to the OEM version available from a dealer. I have no knowledge that this is the case, but it is something to keep in mind.
There are many online sources where one can purchase OEM parts at significant discounts off of what one would pay at a dealer parts counter. |
