IMO, buying a Brother is buying nothing but trouble. YMMV.

I have 3 Brother printers. Not a spec of trouble in years of use. HP is quite another story, however.

I thought laser printers from HP were supposed to be the ne plus ultra of the genre. No?
5 years ago maybe.

That's probably when H-P pulled all their OS X programmers away to work
on their totally awesome touchpad, except the one guy still wearing a mullet

I agree with Fred_also, I bought one in December for $149 and have gone through the toner cartridge. Generic replacement from Meritline is working fine. Fan is noisy though. Have not tried the duplex. But, on the plus side I sold a sold a cabinet job this morning, stocks went through the roof, and my "scratch and dent" item from Amazon works fine.

brother printers ROCK!

The laser printers are solid performers and good value, no doubt.

I'd probably look elsewhere for an inkjet, though, in the unlikely event I'd ever buy another inkjet.

My experience is worse. I bought a Brother laser (5150?) for moderate office use and not only did the thing go through toner and drums at a terrific rate, but began malfunctioning, finally ending up in a cloud of smoke.

I also have a brother MFC 440 inkjet, which I use mostly as a fax machine, and for the occasional color print. Bought a pile of ink cartridges for it (it uses ink quickly), but the blue-ink head stopped working altogether, which means it is useless as a color printer. Works OK as a fax machine, but the paper tray is almost impossible to get out without fear of breaking. Fortunately, most of my incoming faxes come to the computer.

True, the newer HPs aren't as robust as the old workhorses (I still have a LJ 4MP still going, and a 4000 series, too). But I replaced the smoking Brother with a smaller HP (P2110?) and it's been working fine.

In my experience, HP +4 or so; Brother -2. I won't buy another Brother. HP knows how to make printers.
